When we think about Little House on the Prairie, it’s easy to picture golden fields, bustling homesteads, and family gathered around the fire. But just as important to Laura’s story—and to so many of ours—were the teachers who helped shape young minds along the way.

Remember Miss Eva Beadle? With her kind heart and steady patience, she was the very first teacher to welcome Laura and Mary into the Walnut Grove schoolhouse. Then there was Eliza Jane Wilder, Almanzo’s sister, who brought a bit more structure and formality (and a few memorable moments of strictness!) to the classroom. And let’s not forget Etta Plum, who continued the tradition of compassion, education, and community connection as the town grew.
And of course, we couldn't forget that Laura was a Walnut Grove teacher, herself!

Each of these teachers brought something special to the prairie—guidance, wisdom, encouragement—and left their mark on a generation.
And it’s no different today.
Teachers shape our futures with every lesson taught, every word of encouragement, every moment they believe in us before we believe in ourselves. This Teacher Appreciation Month, we're taking a moment to honor them—both the ones we grew up watching and the ones who made a real difference in our own lives.

Oops. I misunderstood. Favorite TV show teacher. Ok. So, this comment will count. My favorite would actually be Eliza Jane- Mrs. Wilder. She had good humor, really had that stern teacher look even though she was a softie- gentle but firm. I think she even had a soft soft spot for Willie. She was sensitive, but she’d come back still trying to help someone. Say, the episode where that big bully (Lassiter boy, I think) was trying to bring her down and he almost had her, but, she stayed in there.
My favorite teacher would be my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Jane Herr. She coached the softball team i played on, too. She’s still teaching today . She delivered a no nonsense class and her selfless I involvement in the church and after school activities have my respect because she is still very active even though she could probably retire. I’m 47, so, she’s well into her 70s by now. She just loves everything and kids.
My favorite Little House on the Prairie teacher was Laura. I loved how she got her start teaching at a young age when she subbed for a teacher who was injured. She helped her student become motivated to take the next steps to become a doctor! I am a special education teacher myself and I got my start teaching by watching my Mom who is a 30 year self-contained veteran special education teacher. I grew up helping her in her classroom and always admired her management skills. She now Nanny’s my daughter and therefore is my daughter’s “teacher” as well! She is the best!
On the show my favorite teacher was Mary. I truly enjoyed the original teacher also. I remember playing school with my dolls and cousins! I’m not good with memories so I don’t remember ones I had in school. Although my grandson teacher is one that stands out most to me. She was and still is very concerned for the ones she teaches. A true caring person. Beth Everett is her name!
You, who played Laura Ingalls, were the teacher who made a lasting impression on me as a kid! If you could become a teacher, so could I!
Jim Coleman was the kindest and most supportive teacher I ever had. He passed a year ago, and I miss him dearly! He helped me to become the best History teacher I could be. I appreciate all the amazing teachers I’ve had the privilege to work with through the years!
