Melissa's Top 5 Favorite Labor Day Activities

Labor Day weekend: The unofficial farewell to summer and a time of leisure that calls for celebration.
Labor day is like a moment of respite before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is in full swing. That's why I LOVE Labor Day. The weather is still nice enough to enjoy the outdoors, and there's no better way to embrace the transitional beauty of this season than by using this time to indulge in some of our favorite activities.
Join me in relishing in my Top 5 Labor Day Leisure Activities, where we combine creativity in the kitchen, outdoor escapades, and a whole lot of nature-loving fun!

1. Get Creative in the Kitchen: A Culinary Labor of Love
What better way to kickstart our Labor Day extravaganza than by getting our hands deliciously dirty in the kitchen? Our culinary creativity knows no bounds as we whip up delectable treats that tickle our taste buds and warm our hearts. From savory grilled dishes to tantalizing desserts, the kitchen becomes our playground.
Labor Day weekend is the perfect opportunity to get your grill on! Here are a few of our favorite suggestions that are simple and delicious:
  • Marinated Skewers: Mix and match your favorite veggies and proteins, marinate them in herbs and olive oil, then grill them to perfection.
  • Gourmet Burgers: Craft your own burger masterpieces with an array of toppings that cater to every palate.
  • Sweet Corn Euphoria: Grill fresh corn on the cob, brush it with a mixture of butter and herbs, and sprinkle with a touch of Parmesan for a burst of flavor.

2. Visit an Apple Orchard: Harvesting Memories and Apples
As the sun peeks through the morning mist, we embark on a charming journey to an apple orchard. Rows of trees laden with ripe apples invite us to pluck the juiciest specimens. The crisp air is filled with the sweet scent of ripe fruit and the promise of apple pies and crisps.

Here's an idea for a fun family activity: Orchard Olympics!
Engage in friendly competitions like apple picking races, apple tossing, and even a "guess the apple variety" challenge. The winner gets the honor of choosing the first apple-themed dessert to bake!

3. Outdoor Fire Pit Magic: S'more Stories and Cozy Conversations
As the sun begins to set, we gather around a crackling fire pit, our faces illuminated by the warm glow. With marshmallows in hand and a twinkle in our eyes, we toast them to golden perfection and assemble our beloved s'mores.
Tip For Some Added Fun: S'more Remix!
Experiment with different chocolate varieties, add a smear of peanut butter, or sprinkle some crushed graham crackers for a unique twist on the classic s'more.

4. Go Explore - Into the Woods: Embracing Nature's Embrace
With our appetites sated and spirits high, we venture into the depths of the woods. The forest becomes our playground, as we hike, explore hidden trails, and discover the beauty of nature in its rawest form.

Organize A Nature Quest: Scavenger Hunt!
Create a list of items found in the woods and split into teams. The first team to find all the items wins a nature-themed prize. Remember, the journey is as rewarding as the destination.

5. In the Garden: Where Tranquility Meets Cultivation
A Labor Day celebration wouldn't be complete without basking in the beauty of a garden. Here, amid vibrant blooms and lush greens, we find solace and inspiration.
A Crafty Garden Activity: DIY Flower Crowns
Gather an assortment of blooms from the garden and craft your own ethereal flower crowns. Embrace your inner woodland nymph as you fashion these botanical masterpieces.

Just a personal extra that I'd love to encourage...Be Barefoot in the Grass: Simple Joys and Uninhibited Freedom
As the day draws to a close, we kick off our shoes and revel in the simple pleasure of being barefoot on the soft grass. We connect with the earth beneath us, grounding ourselves in the present moment and cherishing the bonds we've forged.

Labor Day becomes more than just a holiday; it's a tapestry of experiences woven from creativity, exploration, and connection. As the stars twinkle above and the fireflies dance around us, we're reminded of the magic that exists when we merge our favorite activities with the embrace of the great outdoors.

Thursday after work, I drove to my daughter, Mary Kate’s, university to get her for the long weekend! It’s been great having her home, even if for a few days. We went to DragonCon yesterday (an annual tradition), and she and I had so much fun! Taking her back to school tomorrow. Her Dad and I will miss her, but she’s enjoying her Sophomore Year and is doing great. So proud of her! 💙💙

I live here in Southern California. Will be planting lettuce and broccoli and bell peppers in my garden. Love my rooster apron. 🐓 I like that it is made with light weight material…Will probably BBQ some hot dogs 🌭 and chicken 🐔. Have a good holiday everyone!

I live in Michigan and now is the push for me to get my canning started. Pickled beets, tomatoes, and making basil pesto. I pour the pesto into ice cube trays and freeze. Then I put all the cubes into quart bags until I can have fresh basil pesto all winter long!

I just love the fall. I got married in the month of October. The deep oranges, gold and peach were my colors. It is one of Gods gifts to us. Living in New England is on of best things in my life.

I plan on taking a hike at one of the preserves near my house in Litchfield County CT. Just cut tons of late summer flowers from my garden and harvested the last of the cherry tomatoes. I will be cutting some of my herbs to start the drying process. And my town has a Tractor Parade, where folks drive antiques tractors and some decorate their tractors and others make floats. It’s my favorite small town event. Happy Labor Day weekend to all.
