Join the Fall Reading Challenge with Modern Prairie
Authored by: Laura Bray
Fall is reading season. As the days grow shorter, the air gets colder, and the leaves fall, it is the perfect time to snuggle up and read a good book. To help you get in the mood for a season of cozy reading, here is a fun reading challenge for you. Do one or all of these activities and enjoy this beautiful time of year.
Fall Reading Challenge with Modern Prairie
Read a historical fiction book
We're reading The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner for our October Prairie Pages. Read along with us in the app and then join us on Zoom to discuss the book with the author on October 21. Go to https://www.modernprairie.com/pages/prairie-pages-book-club to register.
Read a book about Thanksgiving
There’s nothing like escaping the craziness of a holiday gathering like sneaking off into a corner to read. I recommend The Irish Goodbye by Heather Aimee O’Neill.
Sip and Read
Go to a local coffee shop, get a pumpkin-spice drink and a cinnamon bun and spend a cozy hour reading. I recommend The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan.
Get Cozy at the Library
Spend a relaxing hour at the library. Go to your local library and head straight the cookbook section. Pull a few cookbooks for soups and pies and pile them up on a table in a quiet corner of the library. Look at the pictures and read the recipes. This isn’t about creating more work for yourself, so don’t feel like you must make anything you see in the books. This is just a time to ease into a daydream.
If you get inspired, bring one of the books home with you and vow to make ONE thing from it. My favorite books about pie making are Kate McDermott’s Pie Camp and The Art of Pie: A Practical Guide to Homemade Crusts, Fillings, and Life.
Schedule a Reading Night with Your Friends and Family
Have a screen-free evening. Gather everyone together, put out good snacks and warm drinks, and spend the evening reading together. You might even consider taking turns reading out loud from a book. I recommend a good children’s classic like The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
All this cozy reading wouldn’t be complete without a warm blanket and a cup of tea. Be sure to check-out the Modern Prairie Collection of throw blankets and mugs.
